The X1008/P, X1018/P, X1026/P devices default to Layer 2 mode. In L2+ mode the default gateway setting is not required with a static IP, and instead a default/static route is used. The behavior we are seeing is intentional. The Default gateway is needed in L2 mode, in which case the GUI allows the field to be set.
